The City of Santa Monica’s Resource Recovery & Recycling Division can help safely dispose of   unwanted records and documents. The event is open to Santa Monica residents and is limited to 5 file boxes each. Electronics recycling will also be available. For more information, email staff at recycling@smgov.net or call (310) 458-2223.

A biographical legal drama film about Thurgood Marshall, the first African-American Supreme Court Justice, it focuses on one of the first cases of his career.

February 6 – Black History Month movie: “Glory” (1989)  – 6 PM – Ocean Park Branch Library
This film is about one of the first military units of the Union Army, during the American Civil War, to consist entirely of African-American men (except for its officers), as told from the point of view of Colonel Shaw, its white commanding officer. The regiment is known especially for its heroic actions at Fort Wagner.

February 17 – LA Opera Multimedia Talk: “Orpheus & Eurydice” by Gluck (in collaboration with the Joffrey Ballet) — 3 PM – MLK Jr. Auditorium, Main Library, 601 Santa Monica Blvd. — Shattered from the sudden death of his beloved Eurydice, Orpheus descends into the underworld in a courageous effort to reunite with his muse. Gluck’s groundbreaking masterpiece, which bridges the musical worlds of Handel and Mozart with its ornate vocal lines and flowing melodies, forever changed the face of opera with its bold emphasis on dramatic clarity and emotional strength.

February 24 – American Stories Group: “The Things They Carried” is a collection of linked short stories by American novelist Tim O’Brien, about a platoon of American soldiers fighting on the ground in the Vietnam War.
