The Friends of Sunset Park Board of Directors has voted to support “Yes on LC, No on D.
A “yes” vote on Santa Monica ballot measure LC will:
Other endorsing organizations include League of Women Voters of Santa Monica, which has stated: “Measure ‘D’ for Deception, placed on the ballot by the Airplane Owners and Pilots Association, totally takes local control of airport away. No lease can be changed, leaded fuel cannot be banned, no flight schools closed, nothing can change without costly city wide election. Redefines “Voter Approval” to a higher standard while guaranteeing status quo.
“Measure LC prevents any commercial development of airport land without a vote, while allowing usage for parks, open space and recreational usages if/when the airport is closed. Allows local control of airport activities to decrease noise and pollution, increase health and safety measures, and increase recreational and park usage as land becomes available.”
Organizational endorsements for “Yes on LC, No on D”: Airport2Park, Ballona Institute, Concerned Residents Against Airport Pollution (CRAAP), Grant Elementary School PTA, Green Party of Los Angeles County, League of Women Voters of Santa Monica, Mar Vista Community Council, No Jets Santa Monica Airport, Northeast Neighbors Board, Ocean Park Association Board, Pico Neighborhood Association Board, Residocracy Advisory Board, Santa Monica-Malibu Council of PTAs, Santa Monica Coalition for a Livable City, Santa Monica Democratic Club, Santa Monica Next, Santa Monicans for Renters Rights (SMRR), Sierra Club, Sunset Park Anti-Airport, Venice Environmental Alliance, West of Westwood Homeowners Association, and the Wilshire-Montana Neighborhood Coalition Board.
Current and former elected officials endorsing “Yes on LC, No on D”: Ben Allen – SMMUSD Board of Education, Mike Bonin – Los Angeles City Council, Gleam Davis – Santa Monica City Council, Jose Escarce – SMMUSD Board of Education, Mike Feinstein – former Mayor, City of Santa Monica, Todd Flora – Rent Control Board, City of Santa Monica, Nancy Greenstein – Board of Trustees, Santa Monica College, Bob Holbrook – Santa Monica City Council, Ted Lieu – State Senator, Kevin McKeown – Santa Monica City Council, Ralph Mechur – SMMUSD Board of Education, Pam O’Connor – Mayor, City of Santa Monica, Terry O’Day – Mayor pro tempore, City of Santa Monica, Nimish Patel – SMMUSD Board of Education, Rob Rader – Vice Chair, Board of Trustees, Santa Monica College; Bill Rosendahl – former Councilmember, City of Los Angeles, Bobby Shriver – former Mayor, City of Santa Monica, Barry Snell – Board of Trustees, Santa Monica College, Oscar de la Torre – SMMUSD Board of Education, Tony Vazquez – Santa Monica City Council, Ted Winterer – Santa Monica City Council, Denny Zane – former Mayor, City of Santa Monica; co-founder of SMRR
Measure D has still to score their first serious endorsement despite over half a million dollars of spending trying. Not a single one in all this time.
The Committee for Local Control of Santa Monica Land (CLCSMAL), which is supporting “Yes on LC, No on D,” is a huge campaign involving hundreds of volunteers spending much of their waking hours every day fighting for our City’s future quality of life, but they can’t do it alone, and they need your help.
Measure D has raised more money than all other candidates and measures combined in the election this year (see pie chart below). CLCSMAL has received more local donations than any other candidate or measure, and yet is still being outspent by 7:1 and that will likely rise to 10:1.
Why is this important? Because 70% of all voters in Santa Monica are renters, and the only proven way to get to them is through mailers. It’s very difficult to reach all of them by canvassing, you can’t reach them all by email, so it has to be mailers, which are expensive, but you have to do it to win in this kind of election.
With their huge funding, Measure D has been reaching these people about twice a week with slick mailers and that rate will likely increase. It costs $20,000 per mailer to do this. CLCSMAL has raised about $90,000 so far and sent out its first mailer is out to absentee voters. But the goal is to send many more mailers, so they need to raise more funds and do it quickly to meet mailing deadlines.
Please reach out to your friends, neighbors, peer groups, and anyone else you can think of that might be willing to donate to preserve quality of life for the surrounding area. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to pass LC and defeat D, and so guarantee in the City Charter that only good things can lie in our future, not the ever-increasing jetport that the other side is fighting for.

Thank you all for your support. The many WILL defeat the money this time. Our future depends on it!

FROM THE CITY CLERK’S WEBSITE — HTTP://WWW.SMVOTE.ORG/BALLOTMEASURES/
MEASURE LC Shall the City Charter be amended to: (1) prohibit new development on Airport land, except for parks, public open spaces and public recreational facilities, until the voters approve limits on the uses and development that may occur on the land; and (2) affirm the City Council’s authority to manage the Airport and to close all or part of it?
MEASURE D Shall the Santa Monica City Charter be amended to require the City to continue to operate the Santa Monica Airport in a manner that supports its aviation uses unless the voters approve the Airport’s closure or change in use, and until that voter approval occurs, the City shall be prohibited from imposing additional restrictions on aviation support services to tenants and airport users that inhibit fuel sales or the full use of aviation facilities?
West Nile Virus – Two dead birds found in the 90405 zip code have tested positive for West Nile Virus. Decrease risk of infection from mosquitoes by using insect repellents (especially at dawn and dusk), by mosquito-proofing your home, and by draining all standing water, as mosquitoes lay their eggs on standing water.
