Airport-related measures on the November ballot: LC and D

The Friends of Sunset Park Board of Directors has voted to support “Yes on LC, No on D.

A “yes” vote on Santa Monica ballot measure LC will:

Keep Santa Monica residents in control of our airport land,
Preserve open space for the residents’ use, not special interests,
Empower the City to end jet noise and jet air pollution, and
Ensure that no development would be allowed without voter approval.

Other endorsing organizations include League of Women Voters of Santa Monica, which has stated: “Measure ‘D’ for Deception, placed on the ballot by the Airplane Owners and Pilots Association, totally takes local control of airport away. No lease can be changed, leaded fuel cannot be banned, no flight schools closed, nothing can change without costly city wide election. Redefines “Voter Approval” to a higher standard while guaranteeing status quo.

“Measure LC prevents any commercial development of airport land without a vote, while allowing usage for parks, open space and recreational usages if/when the airport is closed. Allows local control of airport activities to decrease noise and pollution, increase health and safety measures, and increase recreational and park usage as land becomes available.”

Measure D has still to score their first serious endorsement despite over half a million dollars of spending trying. Not a single one in all this time.

The Committee for Local Control of Santa Monica Land (CLCSMAL), which is supporting “Yes on LC, No on D,” is a huge campaign involving hundreds of volunteers spending much of their waking hours every day fighting for our City’s future quality of life, but they can’t do it alone, and they need your help.

Measure D has raised more money than all other candidates and measures combined in the election this year (see pie chart below). CLCSMAL has received more local donations than any other candidate or measure, and yet is still being outspent by 7:1 and that will likely rise to 10:1.

Why is this important? Because 70% of all voters in Santa Monica are renters, and the only proven way to get to them is through mailers. It’s very difficult to reach all of them by canvassing, you can’t reach them all by email, so it has to be mailers, which are expensive, but you have to do it to win in this kind of election.

With their huge funding, Measure D has been reaching these people about twice a week with slick mailers and that rate will likely increase. It costs $20,000 per mailer to do this. CLCSMAL has raised about $90,000 so far and sent out its first mailer is out to absentee voters. But the goal is to send many more mailers, so they need to raise more funds and do it quickly to meet mailing deadlines.

Please reach out to your friends, neighbors, peer groups, and anyone else you can think of that might be willing to donate to preserve quality of life for the surrounding area. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to pass LC and defeat D, and so guarantee in the City Charter that only good things can lie in our future, not the ever-increasing jetport that the other side is fighting for.
